Aston Villa’s Matt Targett joined Newcastle United on a loan deal in January and prior to his arrival, the Tyneside club looked at other left-backs.

Robin Gosens is among them and he was also wanted by Inter Milan. He eventually joined the Serie A winners and moved to the San Siro on a loan deal from Atalanta. The transfer will be made permanent if certain set conditions are met.

Two days ago, the Germany international admitted he couldn’t ignore a lucrative offer from Eddie Howe’s side before deciding on joining Inter.

Prior to signing Gosens, the Nerazzurri also had Eintracht Frankfurt’s Filip Kostić as their target. The Serbian, who can play anywhere on the left, has managed three goals and 10 assists in all competitions this season, was also on the agenda of the Premier League side in the winter market.

This week’s edition of SportBild explains that Newcastle approached with the 29-year-old’s entourage, but he was not in favour of moving to England.

He currently has his eyes set on making a switch to Italy.

Therefore, the Serbia international ‘cancelled’ an opportunity to move to St James’ Park last month.

Kostić’s contract expires in 2023 and his future remains ‘open’. Eintracht Frankfurt are ‘pushing for a decision’, either to extend the player’s contract or sell him in the summer.

With Inter having added Gosens to their squad, the chances of them returning for Kostić after this season look slim. Newcastle could be under consideration again in the next window, if they manage to convince the left wing-back for the transfer.
