Valencia appear to have pushed their luck too far in transfer negotiations with Newcastle United, a scenario which looked likely when the Spanish side insisted they could get more than €40m for Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Throughout the mini saga we’ve made it clear that there was a distinct chance Valencia were simply being too ambitious with their requests and could miss out on the deal altogether.
Last week it was reported in Spain that Newcastle had offered €41m. That was the total value of the deal and it’s likely a chunk was made up of potential bonus payments.
Super Deporte, local to Valencia, relay English media claims for a Spanish audience and explain how Mamardashvili is unlikely to be going to the Magpies because they’re looking to sign James Trafford for less than half the price.
Whilst Mamardashvili is certainly more accomplished than Trafford, and currently at a higher level, Super Deporte’s claim he’s one of the most valuable goalkeepers in world football is quite the statement.
Newcastle United would have likely paid more for Mamardashvili than they look to be offering for Trafford, but not quite that much more that it would please Valencia.
