Newcastle United were reportedly among the many clubs who watched the Champions League match between Benfica and Ajax on Wednesday night.

As reported by Record, the Magpies had a scouts at the Estádio da Luz, and saw the Eagles get a disappointing 1-1 draw against the Dutch side.

The outlet doesn’t seem to know who the scouts were watching, but from seeing the report, we’ve recalled that Newcastle were linked to a specific Benfica player two months ago.

The Magpies were among the sides who said to be watching Odisseas Vlachodimos in September, according to the very same Record.

They didn’t sound 100% sure in that report, but listed some English sides who would be scouting the Greek international.

Vlachodimos had an average game, making two important saves in the first half, but could’ve done better to stop Ajax’ goal.

Now we wait and see if the Portuguese press will say something about Newcastle scouting Benfica, or Vlachodimos, again.

Any interest would likely be for a back-up position.

Other English sides such as Tottenham, Manchester City, Manchester United, Wolverhampton, Chelsea, Watford, Arsenal, Southampton and Leeds United have all attended to the match as well.
