Newcastle United are also interested in Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen and could challenge Aston Villa for him.
That’s according to BILD, who report that Newcastle have the Dutchman as an alternative option this month if they cannot get their first-choice target.
Malen has been heavily linked with a move to Aston Villa over the last week, with Unai Emery’s side pushing to get a deal over the line for the forward.
He’s keen on the move and has already agreed personal terms with the Premier League side, but Dortmund are yet to agree to a sale. They want as much as €30m for the player, the fee they paid to sign him from PSV Eindhoven.
Aston Villa are yet to offer that figure, but negotiations continue and there is a confidence from all parties that a deal will be struck.
BILD, though, report that Newcastle are ‘also interested’ in the Dutchman. They are not going ‘all-in’ as yet as they have another option, they are exploring to bolster their attack this month.
However, if this deal does not go through, Malen is seen as the ‘ideal replacement candidate’. They may need to move soon as Malen already has an agreement in place with Aston Villa, so they are ahead in that regard.
It all depends on the mystery other target. If Newcastle can’t get him, Malen is the alternative, with it seems as ‘only a matter of time’ before he ends up in the Premier League.
