Nico Castillo is one of those footballers who just look really good.
Only 5ft 10in, the Chilean somehow manages to still look mean and like a handful, and has been banging the goals in for Pumas in Mexico.
The club are ready to cash in on the 25 year old, which has been repeatedly reported in South America, but up until now we haven’t seen an English team linked.
Step forward Newcastle United.
According to Saturday’s edition of Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, Newcastle, Bologna and Sampdoria have all made proposals to sign the player.
However, Benfica are out in front and the Lisbon club are looking to close a deal in the region of €7m. South American reports had earlier estimated a transfer at €10m, a big fee for a player leaving Mexico.
At such a low fee, Newcastle would likely have a problem over a work permit, given Castillo isn’t a regular for Chile.
This one looks like the typical Portuguese style investment: Sign a South American, hope he does well, and then sell him on in a year or two for several times the price.
