Newcastle United attacking midfielder Siem de Jong has told the Dutch media he was surprised to get a call for the Netherlands national team. De Jong is currently on loan with PSV for the season in order to get more playing time.
AD.nl have reported on comments De Jong made when arriving Hotel Huis ter Duin when asked about his recall to the national set-up following a three year absence.
The Dutchman said he didn’t think he would be selected so soon by Netherlands manger Danny Blind after just two games with PSV. However, De Jong said that all along his objective was to return for his country when he took the decision to join PSV in the summer.
“I did not think it would come so soon. But this was a goal when I went to PSV,” said De Jong on his call-up by Blind.
De Jong pushed for a move to his home country throughout the last window after failing to make an impact at Newcastle United. The player suffered with injuries in his time with North East side, and following an attempt to force a transfer to his former club Ajax he eventually signed for PSV.
