Newcastle United midfielder Siem de Jong has been ruled out until next year after picking up another injury during PSV’s clash with Ajax at the weekend. De Jong is currently on loan at PSV from Newcastle United following his injury plagued two seasons with the Championship side.

Rafael Benitez believed he had other options at Newcastle, and so De Jong was sent out to get some games and a settled season.

Voetbal International have today confirmed De Jong will be ruled out for up to six weeks after tearing a groin muscle in PSV’s 1-1 draw with Ajax. De Jong scored PSV’s leveller when he came on as a second half substitute, but the Newcastle United loanee felt his groin go in the final minutes of the game.

This is another setback for the Dutchman following the number of injuries he’s had since joining Newcastle United in 2014. De Jong has been limited to just 22 league appearances since his arrival in England because of a variety of fitness issues.

After sitting out opening weeks of the season due to injury, and now predicted to be out until around February, it’s a concern for parent club Newcastle United. De Jong has a St James’ Park contract until June 2020, and continuing to struggle with fitness means it’d be difficult for the footballer to impress Benitez, and also difficult for Newcastle to get a good transfer fee.
