Rai Sport journalist Ciro Venerato believes if Pepe Reina leaves Napoli this summer it’s likely he’ll join Newcastle United. In recent weeks there have been claims Reina could be reunited with Rafael Benitez, following their time at Liverpool.

Speaking to TMW, Venerato confirmed talks are still ongoing between Reina’s agent and Napoli. The Spaniard’s contract with the Serie A expires next summer, and Napoli’s leaders are hoping he extends until June 2020. However, Renia’s agent is unsure about Napoli insisting on a buyout clause of €5m, and subsequently an agreement has yet to be made.

The Italian club are under pressure to get Reina to commit with just 12 months left on his contract, and if they were to sell, Newcastle United would be the club prepared to meet their demands, claims Venerato.

Earlier this month we reported Newcastle United were looking to move in on Reina, and an offer of €4m could land them the 34-year-old. Benitez knows the player well from their time at Liverpool, and a return to the Premier League is a possibility for the Spain international.
