With Sporting winning the league title, it’s natural that Premier League clubs are interested in their success and target some of their assets.
So it’s no surprise that many Lions players are linked with moves abroad, and even their manager Ruben Amorim has been linked with a move away from the Lisbon side.
It turns out that, as today reported by newspaper Jornal de Notícias, Newcastle United are interested in Sporting’s director of football.
The outlet shares a story explaining those responsible for the Lions’ success in the past few years, and one of the main men is Hugo Viana, who’s been taking care of their transfers.
When highlighting the director’s work, calling him a ‘behind-the-scenes architect’, they point out that the director has been drawing interest from abroad and points out that there are recent links to Newcastle, which are presented as serious.
Last year, Sporting president Frederico Varandas had indeed claimed that Viana has been drawing interesting from abroad, despite not mentioning any clubs.
The director has indeed been responsible for many good buys and sales. The most obvious case this season was the signing of Viktor Gyokeres, who was signed from Coventry City for just €21m. The striker has 41 goals and 15 assists in 47 appearances for the club so far, and will clearly leave the Lions for a lot more in the summer or further ahead.
Now it remains to be seen whether Newcastle will actually move for the man responsible for all the transfer magic.
