Newcastle United are interested in Vasco da Gama striker Marrony, according to reports from the Brazilian media today.

Reliable outlet Globo Esporte says the player was scouted by the Magpies’ head of recruitment Steve Nickson, who liked what he saw.

The website says Newcastle have signalled they could soon make a bid for the 20-year-old, and that’s what Vasco are waiting for.

Marrony is currently protected by a release clause of €35m. Globo Esporte says Vasco are not expecting anyone to match that price, and due to their financial situation they’re listening to offers.

With six goals in 32 appearances this season, Marrony has been showing some good potential for Vasco, especially for being at a club who are currently fighting against relegation in the Brazilian league.

The youngster has been showing some strength and speed, which are usually important requirements to join any Premier League club, but he still needs to improve in several other aspects, especially in finishing.
