Over the past month or so, Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Lazio’s Matteo Guendouzi, without the story really going anywhere.
The slant has been that the Magpies’ move depends on Sandro Tonali’s future, with the midfielder of interest to Juventus.
Gazzetta dello Sport report on Guendouzi’s future today and they believe he can be one of the players sold in the summer. That is because of Lazio’s failure to qualify for Europe.
Newcastle United are ‘in pole position’ for the Frenchman, according to the newspaper, and Lazio’s potential new manager Maurizio Sarri is unlikely to find the midfielder at Lazio when he rejoins.
The ex-Arsenal player is valued at €40m by the Roman side, with the 26-year-old’s current contract running out in the summer of 2028.
Despite all of that, it feels like Newcastle United are being used, either by Lazio or the player’s camp to hype his value.
There has been talk in the Italian press that Guendouzi is pushing for a renewal. Adding Newcastle United in the mix would appear convenient for the France international’s entourage in an attempt to pull a higher wage from his current club.
