Newcastle United have reportedly given up on the signing of the Vasco da Gama striker Marrony.

According to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte today, the Magpies have told the Rio de Janeiro side they’re not making any bids for the player.

It’s claimed that Newcastle had a shortlist of three forward they could invest some money on. They’ve chosen Allan Saint-Maximin.

The Premier League side got heavily linked to Marrony when it was reported in Brazil that Steve Nickson watched the striker and liked what he saw.

And although Vasco wouldn’t demand a lot of money for the 20-year-old, it seems the Magpies didn’t have enough conviction to go for him. It’s not said if there aren’t any plans for a future deal.

Globo Esporte say it’s now much more likely that Marrony will be staying at Vasco at least until the end of the year. The Brazilian club got approaches from the likes of Porto and Sporting, but no official bids have been made so far.
