Newcastle United need to secure their short and medium term future before they can get too excited about glories which may come after Saudi funding really hits.
The club are now in a serious relegation battle and will have to hope they don’t drop too far behind rivals in the coming months. Should things not have improved by January, it will make recruitment all the more difficult, with players obviously not being attracted by the idea of Championship football.
Relegation needs to be avoided if growth plans aren’t going to take a serious, and very early, blow. Managerial certainty is a way to steady the ship, and the Italian media again push forward Rino Gattuso.
The former midfielder is currently looking for a job, and being assisted by Jorge Mendes. Calciomercato say Newcastle’s ‘dream’ is Erik tan Hag, although that looks seriously doubtful right now.
Paulo Fonseca remains in the picture, and Mendes is doing all he can to squeeze Gattuso in there.
