Newcastle United arrived with an agent and ‘a cheque for €40m’ – Magpies said to have made serious attempt

Italian outlet TuttoAtalanta today shares an interesting story on something that reportedly happened in January.

According to the website, Newcastle United made a strong attempt to sign Ederson back in the winter transfer window.

It’s said the Magpies reached Atalanta, with an agent working for them, with ‘a cheque for €40m’, and that offer was turned down by the Serie A side.

TuttoAtalanta explains that the Italian club had already decided against losing a star in the middle of the season. That’s why they didn’t even try to negotiate and closed the door to any talks.

There’s now no sign whether Newcastle could be back for Ederson in the summer, despite how important that amount of money could be for Atalanta.

The midfielder is one of those responsible for their good season, with them now preparing to play the Italian Cup final against Juventus and the Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen.

That success surely means Atalanta will have a busy summer dealing with offers for their players, and it should soon be seen whether Newcastle will make a new attempt for the Brazilian.
