On Wednesday, Portuguese newspaper O Jogo was the first to claim that Newcastle are now closer to signing Andreas Samaris from Benfica, as the Lisbon side have become easier to negotiate with.
They claimed the €15m offered before should be enough this time, if Newcastle agree to include a few bonuses in the fee… as demanded by the Eagles’ president Luis Filipe Vieira.
Other Portuguese newspapers aren’t confirming the Newcastle claims today, but O Jogo stand by it, and even give a few more details about the deal.
They claim that everything is ‘practically done’ between Newcastle and Samaris, especially because the Premier League side are offering him much more than what he earns at Benfica.
The player currently makes €900k an year in Portugal, and Newcastle are offering a threeyear contract with wages of €2.5m after tax per season.
As more than doubling salary at the age of 28 is not a common offer, Samaris is obviously accepting it. Now it’s all about Newcastle and Benfica finding a deal so the transfer can be done.
