For the past couple of days, there are reports claiming Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are both interested in the signing of Wilmar Barrios from Zenit.
These stories can be found both in Colombia, where the midfielder was born, and in Turkey, since Besiktas are said to be interested in him as well.
So after a little digging, we could find that the original post comes from small Colombian website Primer Tiempo. They claim that several clubs have been chasing the Zenit player and could sign him soon.
It’s said that Besiktas, Milan, Newcastle and Tottenham have all approached the Russian side, all counting on Barrios’ wish to play in a greater league.
Thing is that the story was picked up by Turkish outlet Fotomac, which is pretty big, and when covered again in South America, all credits go to them.
That makes the rumour sound more reliable, and even Primer Tiempo is now doing it now. That’s the old back and forth we’re used to seeing when it comes to transfer gossip.
Since Primer Tiempo didn’t even sound so sure about the Magpies’ and Spurs’ chase in first place, never making a lot of noise about it, we probably better wait and see until this story comes from a more reliable source.
