Newcastle United could be given their chance to sign Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic for €25m rather than €40m thanks to him entering the final year of his contract.
That’s according to Sport Mediaset, who say the fact that the player’s contract is coming to an end in 2024 means the Italian side will have to let him go for a much lower price than they’d like.
They explain that Milinkovic-Savic’s future looks to be ‘far from Lazio’ as the big names in Italy and Europe are eyeing up a move.
There is a belief that offers could arrive from the Premier League, with Newcastle one of the sides who can pay what they want to both Lazio and the player as well as offering Champions League football.
They’ve been linked with a move for Milinkovic-Savic for some time, with reports in June last year first naming him as a potential target.
They’ve been in the mix ever since that point and whenever the midfielder’s future has been mentioned, they’re usually among the potential suitors.
Indeed, at the end of last month it was made clear that they were very much in the race, with it later explained that they’d need €40m to get a deal done.
Sport Mediaset now say that figure has dropped to €25-30m, with it explained that his contract, which is set to expire in 2024, means his asking price is inevitably dropping.
Whether that convinces Newcastle to now move, particularly with Champions League football now secured, remains to be seen, but a dropping price tag for a player they’ve long been looking at will definitely be of interest.
