Newcastle United’s hopes of signing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter in January may have been dealt a blow, with the centre-back focusing on the summer instead.

That’s according to Sky Sports Germany, who cover a recent post on Instagram from the German defender regarding his future.

Ginter is out of contract at Gladbach in the summer and, with no new deal in sight, will be free to talk to interested parties come January.

Newcastle are reportedly among those who are keen on him, with a report in Italy earlier this month making it clear that they were providing stern competition to Inter Milan for his signature.

Eddie Howe is likely to target defenders if the Magpies splash the cash next month, as Newcastle’s defensive issues have not been resolved since his arrival.

Ginter would be a smart capture given his age profile and experience, as well as the fact he can be signed on the cheap as his contract is expiring.

However, it was recently reported that Newcastle would have to work to convince him of the move next month as the player was leaning towards focusing on the summer instead.

That now seems to be certain, with Sky covering his latest comments on Instagram, which seems to indicate he wants to wait until the end of the season before making a decision about his future.

“After long deliberations, I have decided not to extend my contract, which expires in the summer,” they report him saying.

“After five great years at Borussia Mönchengladbach, it is very difficult for me to take this step, but I have decided to take another path in my career for my personal and professional development.

“I owe Borussia a lot and will always carry the club and the great fans in my heart. Now we’re going full steam ahead into the second half of the season.

“Those who know me know that I will give everything to achieve the goals that are still possible this season together. Stay healthy and see you soon, your Matze.”
