Originally a substitute when the season started, Karl Darlow has seen his season turnaround quite nicely since the end of September, starting nine league games in a row at the expense of Matz Sets.

The Belgian goalkeeper, bought from KAA Gent in the summer for just over £5m, started the season under Rafael Benitez, but was then placed on the bench.

This has obviously not gone down too well for the player, who would much rather not play EFL Cup games and start in the league, but he’s determined to fight for the number one spot.

At least, this is what RTBF in Belgium are reporting on Tuesday, as they look at who could replace Anderlecht’s Davy Roef, who has made it clear he wants to leave the Belgian side in January.

Listed as a potential target, Matz Sels, according to the Belgian media, does not want to leave the Magpies so soon after arriving, discarding a return to his native Belgium.

Interestingly, the Belgium number three and Karl Darlow have the exact same statistics in the league this season, making nine appearances each, conceding seven goals and keeping four clean sheets.
