Newcastle United are in the picture to sign Everton’s Amadou Onana in the winter market.

The Merseyside club have struggled in the league this season, which sees them sit 19th in the table, two points behind 17th placed Wolverhampton Wanderers. This saw the Toffees part ways with Frank Lampard on Monday.

It could have an impact on Onana’s future at Everton and Newcastle are named as one of his suitors.

According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the possibility of the 21-year-old leaving Everton was initially unthinkable. However, Lampard’s exit, coupled with their need to raise ‘urgent cash’, could ‘open the door’ for the midfielder’s transfer in January.

Newcastle get a mention as they have ‘shown interest’ in the Belgium international. That’s all Tavolieri has to say about the Magpies, without making it clear whether the player is open to the idea of joining Eddie Howe’s side this month.

Everton took Onana from Lille last summer and back in November, he revealed Lampard had convinced him to join the club.

Onana has made 20 appearances in all competitions this season, managing a goal and an assist in the process.
