Already dealing with a lot of interest in Milan Skriniar, Inter are also having to try and work out what is going to happen with Stefan de Vrij.
The Dutch defender’s contract at San Siro expires in 2023, meaning he will be free to discuss a free transfer with clubs as early as January, where Newcastle United might take an interest.
That’s what Gazzetta dello Sport suggest on Friday as they look at what the future might hold for De Vrij, recalling the stories linking him with a move to St James’ Park.
They were prominent in around February and March, when Newcastle were still chasing Sven Botman, whom they eventually signed in the summer.
Still, the prospect of teaming the two Dutchmen at the heart of their defence could be a prospect the Magpies pursue, as Gazzetta state ‘the feeling is that [De Vrij and Inter] are preparing for a long goodbye, that is with his release on a free transfer next summer’.
This is something the Serie A side have been thinking about for a while, and perhaps Beppe Marotta and Piero Ausilio ‘thought that De Vrij would have already left in the last transfer window’.
The problem is that ‘the voices of Newcastle’s interest never had a concrete following’, but ‘it’s possible that, in the coming months, there could be a rekindling from the Saudi-owned club’.
We’re sure that Inter are hoping to get some money in January if they can, even if it would be a small amount, although there’s also the possibility that De Vrij ‘chooses to postpone the decision to 2023’.
Either way, Gazzetta put Newcastle United as ‘the possible destination’ for the Dutchman next season.
