For those who thought Newcastle United had given up on signing Lucas Paquetá from Lyon, here’s French outlet Foot Mercato claiming this pursuit is still pretty much alive.
The website today claims that while the Magpies have made James Maddison from Leicester City their priority, they are also keeping an eye on the Brazilian, who had been linked to them earlier this year.
It’s said Newcastle are ‘ready to put €45-50m’ to land Paquetá, who despite a good start of season with Lyon, is still disappointed about how their last campaign went.
Foot Mercato points out that the Magpies have a ‘powerful ally’ in the pursuit for the player, and that’s Bruno Guimarães.
The duo created a big friendship when playing at the French side, and the midfielder could end up being a factor to attract him to St. James’ Park.
The report doesn’t make clear how much would be enough to take Paquetá from Lyon, but they do claim there’s a risk for the Ligue 1 side to lose the player, and that’s why they hope Newcastle can sign Maddison first.
