Newcastle United have conceded 42 goals in the league this season and have the joint worst defensive record with Norwich City. It’s no surprise these two sides occupy the bottom two positions in the table.

The Magpies now have the financial backing of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, who purchased the club in October.

To improve their chances of staying in the top flight, they could look at bolstering the defence in the winter market. Lille’s Sven Botman has been identified as a target, and he is also on the agenda at AC Milan.

According to Milan News, the centre-back is the ‘favourite’ target for the Serie A side, but they will face competition from Tyneside club, who are ‘pushing’ for his transfer. Botman will cost around €30m, making it difficult for the Rossoneri to take him in January.

Newcastle’s interest in the Ligue 1 man is also reported by Calciomercato.it. Simon Kjær’s long-term absence has forced Milan to invest next month, but the ‘budget available is scarce’.

The Dutchman is the player Milan like the most. Lille, however, have no intention to offer any discounts and are demanding €30-35m. They are also not planning to let the 21-year-old leave on loan with a right of redemption.

Apart from the financial difficulties, Milan will also face competition from elsewhere as the player is ‘highly coveted’. When naming suitors, only Newcastle are tagged. It’s claimed the Premier League side are ‘ready to move right away’ to sign Botman.

These two factors have convinced Stefano Pioli’s side look at cheaper alternatives to bolster their defence for the second half of the season.
