Signing a three-year contract at Newcastle United after arriving from Deportivo La Coruña for €4m, Fabian Schär’s future beyond that deal appears far away from St James’ Park.
The Switzerland international’s contract is set to expire in the summer, and with limited time on the pitch and no renewal in sight, this could be his last season in the North-East.
However, there is at least one club looking at his services to potentially bolster their squad next season, and that’s Inter in Serie A.
The Italian side often play a three at the back formation, meaning they need depth at the centre-back role, and with just four natural in the position currently in their squad, they need an extra man.
Add on top of that the potential exit on a free of Andrea Ranocchia, and the situation could get desperate quickly.
That’s why Tuttosport, relayed by FC Inter News, are reporting the club are looking at a number of names ahead of the summer, which includes the Newcastle man.
On said list is also Shkodran Mustafi and Jérome Boateng, who have also both struggled for game time at their respective clubs this year.
Something to keep an eye on going forward, especially if Newcastle decide against trying to renew the Swiss man’s contract.
