Newcastle United have opened contact for the signing of Nantes winger Moses Simon, according to reports from the French media.

BUT Football writes that the Magpies started discussions with the 26-year-old’s staff as they work on bringing him to St. James’ Park in the next summer window.

By making the move, Newcastle are said to be joining Leeds United in the tussle for the player. It’s said the Whites made an approach in January and ‘remain in position’.

The story says the Magpies are looking to improve a sector which is ‘too dependent’ on Allan Saint-Maximin. That’s why, according to BUT Football, they’re also looking at the likes of Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen and Jeremy Doku from Rennes.

It’s claimed that besides the competition from Leeds United, Newcastle United should also battle other Ligue 1 sides who are interested in the player, including Marseille.

Moses Simon, who is protected with a contract until 2024, has three goals and seven assists in the French League this season.

He’s valued by Transfermarkt at €9m.
