A potential free agent in the summer were he not to renew with Inter, Marcelo Brozovic was looking for an increase in wages.
It took some time, but it appears the Serie A side and their Croatian midfielder have finally reached an agreement, with Gazzetta dello Sport, with the player set to earn €6m net per season until 2026 plus ‘substantial bonuses’ that could take it close to €7m.
That’s still short of the €8m he initially wanted, a package Newcastle United were prepared to offer him, but it was enough to convince him to stay.
As for the Magpies in all this, it’s stated Eddie Howe and co. ‘had reached the famous €8m’, but the Croatian ‘wanted to continue at higher levels’.
That suggests he didn’t particularly want to go from a title winning side to one currently fighting against relegation, which is somewhat understandable.
It’s a shame, since it might have been nice to see the midfielder in the Premier League after years of clubs being linked with him, but it appears his near and distant future will be with Inter.
