Newcastle, still searching for some attacking reinforcements, appear to have been peppering the market left, right and centre with offers these past few days.
One of the players they seemingly targeted was Stade Rennais’ Martin Terrier, who was the subject of a few bids from the Magpies.
That’s according to L’Equipe, who cover the story surrounding the forward’s expected contract renewal with the Ligue 1 side, and reveal a few attempts from Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, who gave it a go.
They point out Leeds and West Ham were the first two to come forward, but their two offers of €30m and €35m weren’t close to making Rennes worry.
However, ‘those put forward these past few days by Newcastle came close to the sum imagined by Florian Maurice’.
In fact, they have been told that Eddie Howe’s side ‘would have gone as far as offering more than €45m’ to try and make the Ligue 1 side give in. ‘In vain’.
This didn’t affect the club’s owner, François Pinault, either, who made it clear in the past he wanted Terrier to stick around, hence the extra year to be offered to the player (until 2026) with a new wage to boot.
As for Newcastle, they’ll have to look elsewhere.
