Newcastle United interest in signing Lille’s Sven Botman in the winter market has already been revealed by the French club, the defender and his agent.
Amanda Staveley, the Premier League side’s chief, recently told The Athletic the centre-back ‘desperately wanted’ a transfer in January and ‘still does very much’ want to move to St James’ Park.
Milan have long been named as a suitor for the 22-year-old and their interest has also been confirmed by his representatives. Calciomercato relayed Staveley’s comments and detail the Serie A side’s plans to secure the Netherlands U21 international’s signature.
Milan chiefs Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara are ‘carrying out’ a ‘great work’ with Lille for Botman.
The Italian club’s strategy is to ‘close the deal’ before the end of the ongoing season. This is done in order to ‘protect themselves’ from competition from Newcastle, who have ‘no intention of raising the white flag’.
Stefano Pioli’s side are ‘optimistic’ in bringing the player to the San Siro for next term. The Rossoneri are of the belief they are in pole position as there is ‘agreement in principle’ with Botman’s agent.
Milan are ready to offer around €35m including bonuses to the Ligue 1 side and they now need a ‘definitive agreement’ with Lille to get the deal over the line.
With Newcastle still keen on Botman, the Serie A side will have a tough battle to land the defender in the summer.
