Newcastle United looked at Torino star Andrea Belotti in January and reportedly made an ‘important offer’ to secure his services. However, they were unsuccessful in their efforts.

The striker is still at the Serie A club and his future beyond this season remains unclear as his contract with them expires in June.

His situation at Torino has attracted interest from clubs in Italy and abroad. Newcastle United fall into the latter category.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb, OGC Nice ‘moved first’ for the 28-year-old, but a move to the Ligue 1 side ‘is increasingly remote’. From England, the Magpies are named as one of the candidates.

It’s claimed Newcastle ‘remain standing’ to sign the frontman. The Tyneside club have joined Toronto FC and four Serie A sides, Inter Milan, AS Roma, Atalanta and Fiorentina, in the chase for the Italy international.

A summer move for Belotti remains likely since the Turin club’s chairman, Urbano Cairo, has hinted the player is likely to leave as a free agent.

“Belotti expires. He may have already signed with someone. Let’s say that from February 1st he was free to sign, theoretically he could also have done so… Disappointed? I no longer talk about this issue,” Cairo told TuttoMercatoWeb.
