Even if Granit Xhaka isn’t a Newcastle United player, anyone who mildly follows football on Tyneside will be aware of what’s going on with the former Arsenal captain.

Steve Bruce’s side have also been dragged into it, with some claims the Switzerland international could end up at St James’ Park, but there’s been nothing to suggest that’s overly concrete just yet.

However, there might be some truth to it, or, at least, Xhaka is aware of the Newcastle option, as Swiss journalist Marcello Pelizzari from Il Corriere del Ticino revealed to Il Milanista.

Asked about the options at the midfielder’s disposal, he said: “At this moment, Xhaka has various options on the table. There’s been talk of Newcastle, which would be a welcome solution, because he can remain in the Premier League. There are whispers he has an offer from Borussia Dortmund, where he would reunite with Lucien Favre, who launched him at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

“When being called up to the national team, we know he loves Italy and Milan in particular. From what we know, from sources close to his entourage, Milan would be the team that is ahead in the negotiations to take him away from London in January, also because Ivan Gazidis knows him since his days at Arsenal”.

That’s good news for Newcastle fans, as there’s no denying the job the player could do in the club’s midfield, and his need for a fresh start is becoming all the more apparent after Unai Emery’s latest quotes suggesting he might have played his last game for Arsenal.

It could end up being Milan vs Xhaka’s former mentor vs Steve Bruce, and that’s an intriguing transfer fight to say the least.

Who will win? We’re sure we’ll find out soon enough.
