Cast your mind back to January in 2018 and you may remember Newcastle United going hard to sign Nicolai Jørgensen from Feyenoord.
They bid several times for the Danish striker, the Dutch side resisted, and that was that. Then followed weeks of comments, disappointment and eventually everyone regretting that it didn’t go through.
Fast forward to 2025 and it sees Jørgensen still hasn’t let it go. In fact, he insists to Tipsbladet today that Newcastle’s offers should have been accepted.
Jørgensen has been without a club for two and a half years and so has now decided to hang up his boots officially.
He’s instead chosen to continue his life as an entrepreneur and has set up a new business, Liga Mentor, which aims to help young players and their parents ‘promote their development’ in whatever sport they’re interested in.
First, though, Tipsbladet wanted the former centre-forward to look back at his career and various aspects of it.
That career saw him starting in Denmark before spells with Bayer Leverkusen, FC Copenhagen, Feyenoord and Kasimpasa in Turkey.
He never made it to England, but he absolutely believes he should have, as Newcastle United’s bids for him in 2018 were more than good enough.
“I had the opportunity to make a big change several times,” he said.
“And it would have been great to try. Newcastle made some bids which were far higher than what I expected to be sold for.
“But then it wasn’t closed, I don’t think there were any who came closer than them. Feyenoord couldn’t find a replacement, and that’s how it ended a couple of times.”
