A month ago, French outlet Foot Mercato reported that Newcastle United had placed a bid for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

With a big battle for the 22-year-old this summer, the Magpies seemed to have moved first by putting over €60m on the table for the move.

So Foot Mercato is now back with a story about Paris Saint Germain’s transfer plans, claiming they’ve been talking to agent Jorge Mendes about some of their targets.

One of them is Darwin Nunez, with the French side said to be ‘in the running’ to sign him, as a replacement for Mauro Icardi. When speaking of the race for the Uruguayan, Newcastle are mentioned again.

The report claims the Magpies placed a bid a few weeks ago, but PSG would have an advantage over the Premier League side, as they’re a destination which ‘appeals much more’ to the player.

Especially because of Champions League football.

So if Newcastle want to stay alive in the race, they better find other arguments.
