Left on the bench for the past two games by Anderlecht interim manager Nicolas Frutos, Newcastle’s Matz Sels’ return to Belgium could be on the verge of taking a bad turn.
Unable to stop the goals from going in under René Weiler, the 25-year-old, who was loaned to the Belgian side for the season after being deemed surplus to requirements by Rafa Benitez, is now under pressure and could lose his spot.
Standing in his way is Franck Boeckx who, after watching the Newcastle loanee from the bench, has grasped the opportunity handed to him by the new man in charge and isn’t ready to let go.
Le Soir run an article on Monday explaining that the 30-year-old’s performances could be problematic for Sels, even if he will get his chance in the coming week to prove he deserves the role.
According to the Belgian newspaper, Frutos was keen to give each goalkeeper two games to prove themselves for the job, with the Newcastle man set to face Celtic and Standard Liège over the next few days.
However, considering Boeckx was the hero over the weekend, somehow managing to stop Waasland-Beveren from equalising, Sels will need to seriously impress if he is to convince the interim manager he should be picked over his teammate.
What should have been an easy return for the Newcastle loanee is becoming anything but.
