Newcastle United might be about to revive their summer interest in Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos but will need a big bid to convince the Portuguese side into a sale.
Record report today that the striker’s start to the season is ‘arousing the covetousness’ of several English clubs ahead of January.
They fail to name who those sides are but say they have learned that three clubs from the ‘first half’ of the Premier League table have ‘already shown interest’ in signing the 21-year-old.
Those clubs have already presented proposals of €30m to make a move happen but Benfica consider that price ‘insufficient’.
They will only open talks at the end of the season for a figure of €40m and manager Roger Schmidt is ‘not even considering’ losing the striker in January. He considers Ramos as indispensable to the team.
They’re somewhat protected by the player being signed to a contract until 2024, which includes a €120m release clause, and would seemingly prefer to wait until next summer to deal with his future.
They were linked with Ramos throughout that window, with reports in England and Portugal making it clear that they were fans of the player.
At one point it was made clear that they were preparing a big bid for the striker, while their interest was then backed up after that as well.
It was clear to all concerned that Newcastle were very much a part of the picture and given their strong start to the season and determination to build on that, we’d be very surprised if they are not back in the picture now as one of the three clubs mentioned here.
