Newcastle United are ‘keeping a close eye’ on Olympiakos midfielder Aguibou Camara, although he is unlikely to move in January.
That’s according to Foot Mercato, who say the Magpies are one of several sides lining up to try and secure the 20-year-old’s signature.
Camara signed for the Greek side in the summer after being rejected by Lille and has quickly proven the French side were wrong to let him go with an impressive six months at his new club.
He’s earned plenty of praise with a series of impressive performances, establishing himself as a key player for Olympiakos and earning rave reviews in the process.
He’s already been likened to Liverpool’s Naby Keita, and a tally of five goals and four assists in the Super League has earned him plenty of admirers.
Newcastle are believed to be among them, with it reported earlier this month that they had sent a scout to watch him in the Europa League.
Camara impressed in that game, and it seems the Magpies’ interest has only increased, with FM now reporting that they are ‘keeping a close eye on him’.
They also state that Camara is ‘unlikely’ to leave Greece in January, particularly as he will be at the African Cup of Nations, but he could be one of the summer’s ‘biggest attractions’.
That is something Olympiakos are more than aware of, and the club’s management, who are always ‘hard on business’, would not hesitate to raise the bidding for a player currently valued at around €15m.
Newcastle are looking likely to be a part of the fight, although maybe their newfound wealth could precipitate a change in club in January.
