Newcastle United are interested in Espanyol striker Raúl de Tomás but may need to spend €35m to get him.

That’s according to Revelo journalist Matteo Moretto, who says the Magpies could be competing with Juventus for his signature.

Newcastle are yet to be as busy as many predicted they would be this summer, with deals for Sven Botman, Matt Targett and Nick Pope their only incomings thus far.

While that’s seen an outlay of £59.4m, that figure is far below the vast sums that many expected them to be splashing out on transfers.

They are yet to be seriously linked to any players who would bring improvement to their forward line, which is surprising given Chris Wood is no a regular goalscorer and Callum Wilson has ongoing injury concerns.

It seems they are looking at options, though, with Moretto reporting they are ‘interested’ in Espanyol’s Raúl de Tomás.

He managed 17 goals and three assists in 34 games in La Liga last seaosn, playing a key role in Espanyol avoiding relegation and finishing joint third in the top goalscorers charts.

Indeed, he scored the same amount of goals as Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior and finished just one behind Iago Aspas in second place.

Those numbers mean he scored one goal fewer than Newcastle’s top three scorers combined last season, so he would be a serious upgrade for Eddie Howe’s forward line.

They would have to pay ‘around €35m’ to secure his signature, but that’s a figure the Magpies’ new, very wealthy owners could comfortably cover.

Whether they will be willing to pay that figure remains to be seen, but the interest is there, according to Moretto.
