Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno ‘can imagine’ a move to Newcastle United, but a transfer in the summer is ‘more likely’ than this month.
That’s according to Sky Sports Germany, who say the German goalkeeper isn’t interested in playing in the Championship.
They explain that it is ‘possible’ Leno will leave Arsenal this month, and Newcastle are ‘intensively courting’ the goalkeeper.
There have already been talks between the player’s management, and the Magpies and Leno has not ruled out the possibility of a move to the North East.
The problem is Newcastle’s current position in the table. They’re fighting relegation and looking likely to lose that fight at this moment in time.
That would see them dropping into the Championship and playing in England’s second division is ‘out of the question’ for the ‘ambitious’ German goalkeeper.
His big goal is to take part in the World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year, and that’s unlikely to happen if he’s playing in the Championship.
There is interest from Spain also, but the Arsenal goalkeeper ‘does not want to rush anything’ when it comes to his future.
It is ‘almost certain’ he will leave Arsenal in the summer, but Newcastle are seemingly working to convince him to bring that departure forward.
