Newcastle United are still very much alive in the race for Sporting midfielder Manuel Ugarte, reports say.
Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna claims that the Magpies are one of the clubs who are set to bid for the Uruguayan player.
Before start talking about Newcastle’s pursuit, we must recall what happened in the past few hours. First the French and the Portuguese media claimed that Paris Saint-Germain submitted an offer for Ugarte worth €60m, which is the amount on his release clause.
Then reports from Lisbon said Chelsea are also battling for the signing and will put the very same amount on the table, to pay in several installments.
Now this new story from Aouna says Newcastle are in as well. It’s claimed that the Magpies ‘informed’ Sporting that they are ‘ready to pay’ the €60m for Ugarte.
With all clubs offering the amount of his release clause, it seems Sporting won’t have much of a preference of where to sell, and it will be the player who will have the final decision.
Another bonus for Newcastle is that, according to reports from the Portuguese media, Ugarte would rather play in the Premier League than in Ligue 1.
