At the end of last month, we covered claims made in France that Newcastle United had joined Club Brugge and Bayer Leverkusen in the chase for Alan Virginius.
The 19-year-old joined Sochaux’s youth system in 2018 and was promoted to the French club’s first team in 2020.
He mainly operates on the right wing, but was used on the other two attacking positions last term, scoring nine goals and providing two assists in the Ligue 2. A ‘very promising’ forward of the French football has attracted interest from Newcastle, says Le10 Sport.
Virginius impressed for France U19’s at the UEFA U19 Championship by scoring three goals and registering three assists from four matches. He is now being courted by several clubs and is ‘close to leaving’ Sochaux.
It’s claimed a ‘final duel’ is being organised between Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen for the youngster, who is ready to make the big jump.
The Magpies are ‘ready to send’ an offer between €5m and €10m to Sochaux. Leverkusen are still in the picture and are ready to respond, likely to Eddie Howe’s side.
It remains to be seen who among Newcastle and the Bundesliga side will be the ‘most convincing’ to sign Virginius.
