Newcastle United may want to revive their interest in Atalanta star Ederson next summer, after offering a ‘briefcase full of millions’ for the midfielder last January.
That’s according to Tuttomercatoweb, who say Atalanta may be open to selling the Brazilian by the summer transfer window next year.
They explain that it is part of Atalanta’s model that they sell their most desirable players at some point, only to rebuild and come back stronger.
This is seen as normal given they focus on young players they can develop, and it will probably happen again next summer. The current leading candidates for a sale are Ederson and Ademola Lookman.
The former has already been the subject of interest from the Premier League, with Newcastle keen on him in January last year. TMW say the Magpies offered a ‘briefcase full of millions’ for the 25-year-old.
This was rejected at the time, but the Italian side know he has ambitions to player in the Premier League or for more ‘prestigious’ clubs like Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Because of that they are not moving to renew his current deal, which expires in 2027, and will instead look at selling him next summer.
At that point he’ll have 24 months left on his contract and Atalanta will see that as the ideal point to sell him at ‘full price’.
Whether Newcastle want to return remains to be seen, and would likely depend on Bruno Guimaraes’ future, but the opportunity may be there after their previous effort.
