There were rumours, but now it appears that Newcastle United are really going after Paris Saint-Germain’s Alphonse Aréola.

That’s according to RMC Sport, who report the Magpies have joined West Ham United in the race to sign the goalkeeper.

Paris Saint-Germain, down their end, ‘want to part ways’ with the France international this summer, and while the Hammers still have the chance of using their option to buy, giving them an advantage, they are yet to do so.

This has left the door open for Newcastle, who have decided to ‘get the ball rolling’ to sign the West Ham loanee, whose contract in France runs until 2023.

Whether that’s to get the starter role ahead of Martin Dubravka remains to be seen, but what is clear is that Aréola won’t want to be a backup once again.

He was brought in by West Ham to back up Lukasz Fabianski, which he did with great success, but at 29 years of age, he will now want to be a regular starter wherever he ends up.

That’s now up to Newcastle to decide and to convince him.
