While it’s common knowledge that Florian Thauvin is currently a Marseille player, and will remain so once the season is over as the clause to make the loan a permanent deal is compulsory, he still remains a Newcastle player for the time being.
Having pretty much recycled their starting XI, changed owners and swapped managers, things appear to be on the up for the Ligue 1 club, helped by the winger’s improved performances.
Also signing Bafétimbi Gomis on loan from Swansea, Marseille hoped the pair would click rather quickly, and that’s exactly what they’ve done.
Scoring seven goals in his first 11 appearances, Gomis has been the main scorer, with Thauvin following behind with three goals in 10 games.
Following the 2-1 win against Clermont in the Coupe de La Ligue, the French striker spoke to the press, relayed by Foot-Sur7, about his relationship with the Newcastle loanee, and got very excited about the 23-year-old’s form.
He said: “We’re lacking consistency, but we’re finding each other bit by bit. I hope to help him. He assisted me, he could have scored as well. Since the start of the season, he’s in the right places, he helps me a lot. He’s an underestimated player, who is very close to the France national team.”
Judging by the reaction to these quotes in France, and the quality currently up top at Didier Deschamps’ disposal, it’s fair to say that might not be the case just yet.
But who knows? With Rudi Garcia, a well respected manager now at the helm, the soon to be former Newcastle player might finally blossom into the dangerous forward everyone thought he would turn out to be.
