Jamaal Lascelles will not be swapping Newcastle United for Besiktas this month as the Magpies demands proved to be too much for the Turkish side.
That’s according to journalist Gökmen Özcan, who reports the matter is now closed and Lascelles will be staying at St James Park.
Reports throughout this month had linked Lascelles with a move from Newcastle to Besiktas, with the Magpies open to deals to help balance the books and get in line with Financial Fair Play.
Lascelles was seemingly keen on the move to Turkey, and it was reported that he had met with Newcastle to ask to be released from his contract before the end of the month.
According to Özcan, Newcastle refused to let the defender leave on a free and instead asked for a €3m fee for the player to let him go before the end of the January transfer window. Fellow journalist Yağız Sabuncuoğlu reports that the fee was €5m.
Besiktas ‘responded negatively’ to the request either way and it seems have now closed the potential transfer completely, perhaps preferring to wait until the summer when he’ll be available on a free.
