During the winter transfer window Newcastle United were linked with a move for Michal Krmencik.
In fairness, during the January window, Newcastle were linked with pretty much every conceivable striker available to them, and then perhaps ended up with the obvious (and potentially best) option of Islam Slimani.
Not all the approaches have been confirmed, and many will be put down to the imagination of the rumour mill.
Krmencik shouldn’t suffer that fate, because Viktoria Plzen’s CEO has confirmed it actually happened.
Speaking to Czech newspaper Dnes, Adolf Sadek is quoted as saying: “In the summer, Slavia came in, Leeds in the winter, then Montpellier, Bordeaux, eventually Newcastle. There were extraordinary offers.”
Dnes reckon the bids got as high as 350m Czech Koruna for the 24 year old, which is around £12m, and Sadek said he’s been told he’s ‘crazy’ for knocking it back.
Sadek accepts that: “Yes, we went into risk, because Michal may be injured or lose form during the spring, but we have also shown all domestic competitors that we definitely do not consider the league as a finished thing.”
A sale therefore sounds likely for the summer, and Sadek added: “Everything is for sale, only in winter there was no figure to convince us. I promised the coach.”
