Newcastle United are ‘continuing to pay attention’ to Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as a possible target for the January transfer window.
That’s according to Jornal Do Noticias, who say the goalkeeper could be set for a departure once the winter window opens.
They explain that Costa ‘continues to be a tempting target’ for several Premier League sides and, according to their information, Newcastle are one of them.
They sent ‘emissaries’ to observe the goalkeeper in Portugal’s clash with Spain in June, which he started.
Costa is set to be a part of Fernando Santos’ squad in Qatar and could use the World Cup to get the move he wants, with the player said to be ‘looking for a change’.
He’s currently valued at €25m but has a release of €60m, so it would likely take more than the former figure to secure his signature, particularly in the January window.
Porto are fully expecting a move to happen though and signed goalkeeper Samuel Portugal on the last day of the window as a future replacement.
Whether Newcastle will make a move remains to be seen and any transfer effort would make little sense given they paid to sign Nick Pope from Burnley in this window, and he’s proven to be a big hit early on in his career at St James Park.
But JN insist they are one of the Premier League sides keeping an eye on him after showing interest in the summer.
