Newcastle United can offer a ‘dizzying financial figure’ to Sevilla defender Diego Carlos to tempt him to St James Park this month.
That’s according to La Colina de Nervion, who look at the potential transfer today and state it would ‘greatly diminish the Brazilian’s aspirations and projection’.
Newcastle have been linked with a move for a central defender this month, with their weakness in defence well known at this point.
Improving that with their newfound wealth is believed to be high on the agenda, and Carlos has been named as a target they are willing to spend their money on.
La Colina de Nervion explain that their ‘economic prosperity’ is translating into ‘important attempts’ to sign big-name players, and one of those is Carlos. They don’t believe the move makes sense, though.
Carlos is a ‘fundamental pillar’ at Sevilla, and they are keen to sign him up to a new deal for several more seasons. That deal is practically done but not confirmed, giving Newcastle their chance.
They have the capacity to pay Carlos’ €75m release clause should they wish.
The Brazilian is a player whose career is on the up, but the website argues that could be ‘seriously curtailed’ by a move to St James Park.
That ‘reality’ is one made clear by the current Premier League table, in which Newcastle currently sit second to last with just one win to their name.
Moving to Newcastle would mean swapping a fight at the top of the table in La Liga for an attempt to escape relegation and, in the longer term, a move further away from Champions League football.
The Magpies situation means players are ‘reluctant’ to make the move, but Newcastle can offer a ‘dizzying financial figure’ to sway their thinking.
In terms of Carlos, the offer on the table is ‘far more’ than he could get at Sevilla, even in a renewal that will see his wages bumped up.
It means a deal remains ‘more in the balance’ at this moment in time, even if the move is a considerable downgrade for the player.
