While he did get his first taste of Premier League football at Chelsea, Bertrand Traoré’s career took him to France as Lyon decided to spend £9m on the winger after his successful loan spell to Ajax.
He’s been there since 2017 and mostly enjoyed his time but has never quite managed to make himself a undisputed regular at the Ligue 1 club.
With Lyon now likely to miss out on Champions League football and a number of options up front to contend with, this summer could be an ideal time for the Burkina Faso international to try his luck elsewhere, with Newcastle United a reported option.
That’s what Foot Mercato are claiming on Tuesday, explaining that a number of clubs have ‘asked for information’ on the 24-year-old, including Steve Bruce’s side.
As for Traoré, it’s stated he is ‘open to listening to offers’ as he knows there’s a lot of competition at Lyon and he ‘doesn’t want to be considered as an emergency backup’, which is what has happened under Rudi Garcia.
That means an exit would probably be best, but as Foot Mercato ask, the question remains where?
Newcastle United would certainly be a decent option for him, but they would also face competition from Real Betis in La Liga and Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.
Will Premier League money talk or will the player favour a reunion with Nabil Fékir in Spain?
