Newcastle United will need €40m if they wish to sign Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic Savic this summer, although they are yet to make an ‘official’ offer for him.

That’s according to Il Messaggero, relayed by Calciomercato, who say Mateja Kezman is working on a move for his client and Newcastle are among his ‘suitors’.

They explain that Lazio’s summer transfer window hinges on qualifying for the Champions League and the nature of Milinkovic’s farewell.

He is entering the final year of his deal at the end of the season and has not yet agreed an extension to that, meaning Lazio will need to sell this summer to avoid losing him on a free next year.

At the moment Claudio Lotito has set a €40m asking price on the player and is refusing to move on that, especially given it is half of what he was asking for last year.

Kezman has been working to find a club willing to bid for him, having guaranteed those in charge at Lazio that he will be able to find buyers and bring in ‘significant money’.

That is more of an idea than a reality at this point, though, with none of his ‘suitors’, with Arsenal and Newcastle named specifically, making ‘official offers’ for him as yet.

There is plenty of time for that to change and the Magpies certainly have the money to match Lotito’s demands, particularly if they qualify for the Champions League as expected.
