On Wednesday, Bild journalist Christian Falk reported that Bayern Munich’s Niklas Süle can possibly join Newcastle United.
The defender’s contract expires at the end of the current season and there’s been no progress in talks with the Bundesliga side over a new deal.
Bild’s claimed are backed up by Sport1, who say ‘there is something to the rumours’ linking the 26-year-old with the Magpies. That’s because they are ‘actually interested’ in the player.
The Tyneside club can potentially sign the centre-back for nothing next summer, but the question is whether ‘Newcastle have a chance’ to take the Germany internationally? ‘Rather not’, say Sport1.
Süle wants an annual salary of €10m to sign a new deal with the Bavarian club. It won’t be an issue for the Premier League side to match these figures, fresh from the takeover of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
However, Sport1 say the sporting challenge may not appeal to the former Hoffenheim man, as a move to St James’ Park ‘would be a relegation for Süle’.
Despite ‘not really’ taking the Newcastle United option into account, Sport1 say the Bayern man ‘can still imagine a future in England’, having flirted with other Premier League clubs in the past. This suggests Süle would prefer other [top] English clubs over Newcastle.
