Southampton signing Wesley Hoedt has of course made news in the Netherlands.
There’s the usual pride at a Dutchman moving to the Premier League, but it’s also thought Hoedt arriving at Southampton could have an impact on Virgil van Dijk’s future.
Van Dijk will now have renewed hope of getting a move to Liverpool, believe De Telegraaf, with the Dutch newspaper saying Hoedt is a similar type of defender to the want-away 26 year old.
However, Martin Haar, Hoedt’s former coach at AZ, believes the two are quite different in their approach to defending and told De Telegraaf that Hoedt will now develop further at Southampton.
There’s been excitement in the Dutch press all summer about Van Dijk potentially moving to Liverpool.
When the defender was denied his move, and an apology was forced out of the Anfield club, it led De Telegraaf to speak to legal experts in football to see if there was any way to force a transfer.
With that in mind, Hoedt to Southampton was always going to lead to claims Van Dijk to Liverpool could be back on, whether it is or isn’t.
Van Dijk would potentially become the world’s most expensive defender if he moves from Southampton to Liverpool, and that would be welcomed by many in the Netherlands.
